The S & P 500 broke past 5,000 for the first time ever this week, but investors will see if the momentum can stick in the week ahead with more inflation data and earnings results on deck. On Friday, both the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were headed for their fifth straight week of gains, and their 14th winning week in 15. FactSet data shows S & P 500 earnings are tracking to have risen 2.8% in the fourth quarter, which would be a second straight quarter of earnings growth, and some expect that positive momentum will remain intact in the weeks ahead. A cooler-than-expected print has the potential to be greeted with enthusiasm, sending the S & P 500 even higher. The S & P 500 is up by 5% this year, with Nvidia higher by more than 40%.

Wall Street will endeavor to keep the November momentum going in the final month of 2023, as investors look for a broadening out of the rally that has been dominated this year by a handful of tech names. It also marked the best monthly performance for the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite since July 2022. While the S & P 500 cap-weighted index climbed more than 18% this year, the equal-weighted index is up by just over 4%. They highlight the attractive relative valuation of value stocks compared to growth stocks, as well as the significant underweighting of value names in portfolios by traders. And the question is, is it going to be in 2024, is it going to be 2025 or in 2026?

2023: The year of chasing yield Investors historically chase after stock performance, but 2023 has been the year of chasing after yield performance. This year, the combined assets under management at money market funds grew to a record $6 trillion. There have been large inflows into short-term Treasury funds like the Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) and, surprisingly, even into long-term Treasury ETFs like the iShares 20+Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT). Still, some think a large chunk of the money in short-term Treasuries and money markets is "scared money" and will be "sticky." Those institutional investors "Don't want any money in cash because it will lag behind the stock market," he told me.

The iShares MSCI emerging market Asia exchange traded fund is up 11% and the iShares core MSCI emerging markets ETF is up more than 10% since the year began. For Kotler, it's emerging market bonds, where his firm has an overweight rating as opposed to a neutral rating on equities. One other factor that should help emerging market countries outperform in 2023 is the winding down of the strength of the U.S. dollar. Some top emerging market bond funds include the iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF , the Vanguard Emerging Markets Government Bond ETF and the VanEck JP Morgan EM Local Currency Bond ETF. Of course, the downside to large emerging market funds is that they tend to be most heavily weighted to China, as it's the largest emerging market country.
Bespoke Investment Group noted that in the first seven trading days of 2023, 175 stocks in the Russell 1000 are up 10% or more. Going into 2023, the pain trade was that the market would rally. "An in-line report doesn't cut it, in-line has already been sold," Chris Murphy, co-head of derivative strategy at Susquehanna, told me. "In my mind it [CPI] would have to be below consensus for the market to rally," he told me. He is particularly watching rental costs: "For inflation to come down, rents have to come down, and if they don't the Fed is going to be concerned."

New York CNN Business —The strong dollar has been a headwind for blue chip US companies in the Dow and S&P 500 this year. And the Russell 2000, another index of mostly smaller companies, is down 25%, too. Also, the dollar is so strong — the US Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against the euro, pound, yen and several other currencies has soared 18% this year — it’s making foreign imports cheaper. But real estate stocks have been slammed by worries about a housing and office real estate slowdown. And multinational companies and foreign stocks will fare more poorly than smaller companies with little to no international exposure.
Today, I'm breaking down what to know about the Fed's third jumbo rate hike, and how markets could look in its aftermath. In this March 21, 2018, file photo, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks following the Federal Open Market Committee meeting in Washington. A third, outsized rate hike is an unprecedented move by the Federal Reserve. For this meeting in particular, billionaire David Rubenstein warned that a 100-basis-point hike this week would shock and depress markets and investors. What's on deck for markets after a third consecutive large rate hike?
